A MICROCOSM OF THE DARTMOOR IN-BYE: do the answers lie in the soil?

Friday 6 September 2024

11am – 3.30pm
Langaford Farm Trust, North Bovey, Chagford, Dartmoor

Langaford Farm is a wonderful 100 acre nature reserve, a mosaic of rhos pasture and hay meadows, with a stunning variety of wild flowers and rare invertebrates. As with much of the in-bye around Dartmoor, Langaford has a range of soils. These reflect both the differing natural environmental conditions and the way people have used the land over the centuries, if not millennia. The soils at Langaford are well studied by a range of groups with land based interests. This workshop will be an opportunity to get up close and personal with the most important of the in-byes soils under the guidance of two soil scientists who have had life time careers studying West Country’s soils.

Sounds of the Earth...a new release
Luke Ramsey, from UWE and his colleagues will be contributing to the workshop with a session on the sound of soil - cutting edge research recording the sounds emanating from marginally above and below ground level. Fascinating stuff. Recordings made at Langaford will be played live.
