Winkleigh Community Nature Area

In February 2023, Winkleigh Recreation Field trustees decided to expand the biodiversity area. They scraped off the turf from the field to make banks and sowed with a commercial grass and wild flower mix. Grants came from Tarka Country Trust and ND Biosphere. They also planted hedges and a widely-spaced whips. The drought of May and June delayed germination, but some annuals are now flowering. There are cornflowers, corn marigold and white flax. Next year there will be Yarrow, Dandelions and Clovers. The plan is to mow a path for public access. After the slow start, it was good to see pollinators enjoying the flowers last weekend.
