I can recommend the Merlin Bird Id app from Cornell Lab of Ornithology, search your app store for "Merlin" and it will show up. It allows you to identify birds using a photo or identification clues, its produced in association with British Trust for Ornithology who gave input to the UK birds. I've not used it abroad but it is international. As a new bird spotter when I put up feeders a year ago it was very useful and its been spot on every time I used it even with photos that were less than perfect!
