Yelverton Meadow Project: Volunteers Sought

Local councillor Ric Cheadle has published the following article in the June/July edition of Moor Links:

'Buckland Monachorum Parish Council has been approached to see if we would be willing to establish wild flower meadows on some of the ground we manage around Yelverton. Having looked at the idea, we have selected a piece of land which might be suitable between the entrance to Briar Tor and the fire station. This would involve not regularly mowing the area and allowing wild flowers to establish, thereby providing a suitable habitat for birds, bees and other wildlife. Wildflower meadows take a few years to establish and are not ‘neat and tidy’ so we thought one relatively small area would act as a trial, and if successful could be expanded to include other areas if supported by the community.

‘To do this properly, we need a few willing volunteers to act as ‘stewards’ of the area, do the odd bit of ‘maintenance’ and generally keep an eye on progress. If you are interested in improving our biodiversity and would like to volunteer for this project, please let the Clerk know (clerk@bmpc.info) and if there is support for the idea, we can set the wheels in motion. If you would like to know more about wildflower projects like this, the organisation Plantlife (www.plantlife.org.uk) is a great place to start.’
