Video of Wild Bees of the Meadows, John Walters

Post by Donna Cox »

Hi everyone, if you couldn't make it to Chagford recently to see renowned ecologist John Walters' fascinating talk on wild bees - Masons, Miners and Scissors - Wild Bees of the Meadows - or if you did and you'd like to see his inspiring talk again - here's the link:
https://youtu.be/P-2o-b41sdk

John Walters is hugely knowledgeable and introduces the secret life of nesting miners, leaf cutters and snail shell nesting bees (yes there's a bee that lays its egg in an empty snail shell and, what's more, covers this over to protect it with a mini grass haystack - it's worth watching John's incredible video footage just to see this amazing feat alone!). You'll also learn about bee cuckoos and their parasites, the Nomad bees, oil beetles and bee-grabber flies!

John is a naturalist and consultant on many television and radio programmes, and illustrator of The Wildlife of Dartmoor.

That's an enjoyable and informative talk. Does anyone know of any entomologists who might be able to spend a few hours looking at our two small wildlife areas in East Devon next summer? Our meadow on the hill is buzzing and chirping with insects on a sunny summer day, but I think an expert would identify a lot more species than I ever will. I'd be willing to pay for professional help.

There are pictures of our wildlife fields at https://zedland.uk/.

Yes I know a great entomologist who fits the bill. His name is George and if you're on Instagram you'll find him @georgeantzmitchell
Or let me know and I'll see if I can share his details. He'll charge but not ott and he is SO knowledgeable!
