Re: Mid Devon newbie 👋
Hi, Yes I agree. Topsoil is generally far too fertile and you will be endlessly battling tough grasses and other vigorous plants. There is a lovely case study you might be interested in, where a meadow was created from scratch after stripping off the topsoil and selling it! See https://moormeadows.o...

Yes, iRECORD is good. A warning that many apps store your records but that's where they stay and there's no way of getting them verified to make sure species are what you say they are. Biological records are valuable data that helps inform the status of wildlife and are held by our Devon Biological ...

Re: Sourcing Viola riviniana seeds and viola palustris seed of wild SW provenances
Hi Amy Some years ago I collected a lot of V. riv seed and propagated violet plug plants for a fritillary project. It is slightly fiddly as you need to collect the pods at the right stage. However, I found it was very satisfying once I'd got my eye in and found some good spots. If you have a nice ed...

Re: New meadow year 2, what next?
Hi, I see you are in Lincolnshire so a local Devon mix isn't necessary. I have tried seed from landlife before. See https://www.wildflower.co.uk/wildflower-seed-mixtures/80-20-wildflower-meadows-seed-mixtures.html Emorsgate is another supplier and they aren't too far from you, although I don't know ...

That looks promising. You have yarrow, ox-eye daisy, salad burnet, creeping buttercup and some sort of crane's bill (probably Dove's-foot Crane's-bill) in your photos. Steve's advice is definitely the way to go.
