Thanks for the suggestions for our new thicket. In the end I was a bit limited for choice as it was late in the season but I'm pleased with the 'fruit and nut' bundle from Glebe Farm hedging (minus Rosa rugosa which is non-native and too thuggish). Wildlife friendly shrubs
I have an opportunity to re-plant a shrubbery in our community meadow. There is space for 15-20 shrubs, currently occupied by some rather dreary snowberry bushes. I would be interested in knowing more. Greener Ugborough Parish has a hedges group where we aspire to work with local landowners to lay hedges rather than flail them, but having some money could really help change behaviour

Thanks Steve. This is an area around trees where we have left the grass long for wildlife but haven’t sown wildflowers as our efforts have been focused elsewhere. To rake or not?
An area of communal meadow was cut in the autumn and there are patches of dead grass 'thatch'. Is it better to rake these up to allow wildflower seedlings to grow, or leave them in place for the millipedes that are sheltering underneath?
